Uncovering Untapped Opportunities: A Guide to Finding Unsaturated Niches

The mythical animal within the affiliate marketing space is the unsaturated niche. Finding these hidden gems can make you a lot of money and lead to huge opportunities.

Most affiliates stick to the mainstream evergreen niches like fitness, pets, and travel without delving too deep into the entire niche for those deep-rooted communities who are underserved by the bigger niche as a category.

Mainstream niches (Everyone uses)

  • Health
  • Food
  • Travel
  • Pets

If you can find these niche pain points for big niches you have an opportunity to create a profitable business by serving those sub niches. These truly are the golden opportunity niches.

Instead of mainstream, you could focus on these sub-niches

  • Cardio for senior citizens
  • Gluten-free foods
  • Family travel tips
  • Reptile pets – snakes, lizards

I’m always looking to carve out a new place in the sub-niche market. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into actionable strategies to identify untapped niches ripe for exploration.

Now that should start to help clarify the key learning this article provides. Theres riches in the sub niches.

The Research

Researching Market Trends and Consumer Demand

Start by analyzing market trends and consumer demand to identify emerging opportunities. Utilize tools like Google Trends, industry reports, and social media insights to uncover niche markets experiencing growth and rising interest.

You want to find a niche that has a decent search volume with high relevance to specific queries and terms. In this instance, smaller search volumes become highly relevant to people in that niche because they know the lingo and terminology.

Exploring Niche Subtopics and Long-Tail Keywords

Dive deeper into niche subtopics and long-tail keywords to uncover underserved segments within broader industries. Conduct keyword research using tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs to identify specific topics with decent search volume and lower competition.

Before I even start the SEO keyword tools I’m trying some different search terms and phrases in Google search to see what comes up. I want the results to catch my eye, and then I’ll go through the process of qualifying the data.

Some tools for assessing the data:

  1. Google Keyword Planner
  2. Google Trends
  3. Google Search
    1. Google Auto Suggest
    2. Google People Also Ask
  4. Keyword Research Tools

Assessing Subniches and Shoulder Niches

Beyond broad industries, subniches and shoulder niches harbour unique opportunities for innovation and differentiation. Subniches represent specialized segments within a larger industry, while shoulder niches intersect with adjacent markets, offering crossover appeal to niche enthusiasts.

Some examples

  • Niche – Tabletop games
  • Sub Niche – Dungeons and Dragons tables
  • Niche – Pets – Dogs
  • Sub Niche – Bull Mastiff Dogs

Conduct thorough market research and keyword analysis to identify these hidden pockets of opportunity and evaluate their potential for growth and profitability.

You want to find pain points in the main niches where a group of people have broken off to form their groups and communities and there’s a thriving supply and demand economy.

NFL commerative rings

Memorabilia is a hot niche that’s evergreen there will always be sports fans, and sports fans are passionate about their teams. They love the history they love collecting highlights, player stats and team merch. I’ve had a lot of success with sports memorabilia.

Where do you look for unsaturated niches?

I am a big believer that you need to be in the weeds to find these niches. You have to go down rabbit holes, in community forums, talking or at least reading page after page of community pages to find these unique niches.

Leveraging Audience Insights, Pain Points & Feedback Loops

The best way to make sure you are hitting need of the sub-niche is to get validation that you are. To do this I usually place feedback widgets, surveys and forms before going full-scale affiliate sales machine on the niche.

I test the water by asking if I’m on the mark.

The feedback I get is absolute gold. They provide little nuggets that spark more thoughts and ideas to help push your creativity in the niche. You need to know the inner workings of the niche, to get the trust of that community.

Understand your target audience’s needs, preferences, and pain points to identify niche opportunities aligned with their interests.

Utilize surveys, polls, and feedback loops to solicit feedback and understand what resonates most with your audience. Pay close attention to niche-specific forums, Facebook groups, and subreddits to identify emerging trends, common frustrations, and areas ripe for innovation.

Analyzing Competitor Landscape and White Spaces

Study competitors within your niche to identify gaps and white spaces in the market. Assess competitor offerings, pricing strategies, and customer feedback to pinpoint areas where you can differentiate yourself and offer unique value propositions.

When looking at competitors keep the big niche competitors on your watchlist but add in your exact sub niche competitors if they exist, that’s the beauty of unsaturated niches.

Exploring Emerging Platforms and Trends

Keep a pulse on emerging platforms and trends that cater to niche communities. Platforms like Discord, Twitch, Product Hunt and specialized online communities offer unique opportunities to connect with passionate enthusiasts and build a loyal following.

Stay on top of emerging technologies, cultural shifts, and niche-specific events to spot emerging trends and capitalize on untapped opportunities. Monitor the news and take key notes on these trends.

Testing and Validating Niche Ideas

Before fully committing to a niche, test and validate your ideas through minimum viable products (MVPs), landing pages, or pre-sales campaigns. Gather feedback from early adopters and iterate based on their responses to refine your offering.

If I had to startup this weekend

  1. Buy domain name
  2. Build website
  3. Create the content and product pages
  4. Create your conversion points – forms checkouts etc
  5. run some ads on a low budget $500 max
  6. review results

This method is my validation checklist for pushing forward on ideas or putting it on the bench. Everyone tests differently but for fast feedback this is my starter kit.

Software is your friend here.

You have to conduct that initial research to get to a point where you know the size of the opportunity. leveraging audience insights, and staying attuned to industry trends, will uncover untapped opportunities and leverage positions for you.

Conclusion: Seizing Opportunities in Unsaturated Niches

In the quest for finding the mythical untapped niche, you have to go down the internet rabbit hole. Your strategic advantage from doing this is unique knowledge, fan-first insights and data.

In short Uncovering unsaturated niches requires:

  • strategic research,
  • audience engagement, and
  • trend analysis.

By immersing yourself in niche communities, exploring subniches and shoulder niches, and leveraging audience insights, you can identify hidden opportunities and position yourself for success in niche markets. Embrace innovation, adaptability, and a willingness to explore uncharted territory, and you’ll unlock the potential of untapped niches to fuel your entrepreneurial journey.

Go down that rabbit hole and get it.

Trending Products 2024: Unveiling 7 Profitable Ideas

All you need to get started selling these items is some time to research them in detail and a store to sell them from, I like Shopify stores for quick-to-start sales platforms. You can get a free account from this website.

To get the products I usually start a store by dropshipping products, and when I know there is a demand for the product and I have found the right audience only then do I switch to a proper e-commerce brand store. Pro Tip: Discover How to Craft Unique Product Ideas That Resonate with Your Audience

Pet care affiliate niche example

1. Man’s Best Friend and Income Stream

They say a dog is a man’s best friend, but what they don’t mention is the considerable cost of maintaining that friendship. As the trend of pampering pets like family members continues to surge, so does the golden opportunity for brands in the pet food and accessories industries. Just ask Mars, the candy giant busy acquiring veterinary clinics across the US.

With pets now receiving royal treatment, the accessory business is booming, creating ample room for new companies to join the ranks of pet-loving entrepreneurs.

2. Baby Booms = Profit Booms

If you predicted a baby boom from the prolonged periods of home confinement (because, really, there’s only so much banana bread one can bake), you were onto something. The statistics now reflect the evidence, and what do more babies mean? Increased demand for baby products, of course.

Sure, we might have to endure more “Baby Shark” renditions, but the positive side is the escalating demand for baby essentials. Think prams, cots, smart baby monitors, and other top-notch items that are not only baby staples but also boast rewarding profit margins in comparison to the fiercely competitive clothing market.

3. There’s No Place Like Home: Tapping Into the Goldmine of Comfort

Dorothy had it right when she clicked those iconic red heels and declared the immortal words—there truly is no place like home. Granted, her company included a talking scarecrow, a friendly lion, and a man crafted from scrap metal, but the essence holds true.

In the era of remote work becoming the norm, even if only part-time, our homes have become more than just a dwelling—they’re our sanctuaries. As we spend more time in our abodes, our focus shifts towards enhancing our living spaces with home comforts. Clean and tidy homes, tasteful furniture, plush furnishings, and delectable home-cooked meals are now at the forefront of our desires. These niches are teeming with potential, offering you the chance to pave your own yellow brick road to profits in 2024.

4. Keep it Comfy and Professional: The Rise of “Business on Top, Casual Below”

“Business in the front, party in the back” once described the infamous mullet (which incidentally made a comeback this year), but now there’s a new catchphrase making waves—business on the top, casual on the bottom.

Admittedly, it might be the first time you’re hearing it, but let’s make it a reality!

With video calls becoming a staple of our workweek, the need to strike a balance between professionalism and comfort is more crucial than ever. Enter the era of high-quality comfortwear, a trend that has been steadily gaining momentum and shows no signs of slowing down.

For entrepreneurs looking to ride this wave, securing a dependable distributor for top-notch comfortwear is a surefire way to position yourself as a winner in 2024. So, get ready to embrace the fusion of style and comfort as you navigate the ever-evolving landscape of remote work and redefine the way we dress for success.

5. Soaring to New Heights: The Resurgence of Jetsetting

As we find ourselves engulfed in work and grappling with the ever-escalating costs of living, a profound dilemma emerges: how do we curate envy-inducing social media posts that scream coolness and adventure?

Enter the confluence of a reopening world and the insatiable hunger for exploring diverse cultures. This harmonious blend has sparked a surge in the desire to travel, be it local escapades or global odysseys.

This revival of wanderlust isn’t just about the destinations; it’s a call for an array of travel-related products. From trendy beach accessories to must-have travel essentials, the market is ripe for businesses ready to leave their mark. And let’s not forget the tech-savvy adventurers who appreciate a gadget or two to elevate their escapades. So, buckle up for the journey ahead and seize the opportunities that the travel trend is ready to unfold for your business in 2024.

6. Cruise in Elegance: Elevating Travel Beyond the Skies

While jet-setting in style remains a coveted pursuit, it’s not the only mode of travel getting a makeover in 2024. In the ongoing quest to make a lasting impression, individuals are directing their attention towards enhancing their automobiles. Think premium car care products, sophisticated diffusers, and luxurious seat covers.

This shift in consumer behavior offers a unique opportunity to steer your business towards the fast lane of car-related accessories and products. As people invest more in their vehicles, 2024 presents the ideal moment to rev up your offerings and cater to the growing demand for products that seamlessly blend style and functionality. Get ready to switch gears and embark on a journey towards success in the flourishing world of automotive accessories.

7. Cultivate Prosperity: The Verdant Path to Success

In the grand finale of our journey through lucrative trends, let’s shift our focus to a different kind of green – the one that doesn’t just signify dollars but also the lush world of plant-related products, paving the way for you to embrace more of the green!

In 2024, the spotlight on mental health is set to shine even brighter, and plants are emerging as pivotal players in enhancing both home life and mental well-being. As people seek solace in green companionship, there’s a burgeoning demand for plant-related products that cater to this growing trend.

Moreover, consider the allure of products like plant seeds – small, versatile, and easy to deliver. They present an ideal opportunity for entrepreneurs working with limited stock space to tap into this flourishing market. So, seize the chance to sow the seeds of success in 2024, where the green revolution isn’t just eco-friendly but also financially rewarding. Get ready to nurture growth and prosperity with products that elevate both spaces and spirits.

Ecommerce Launchpad Toolkit

Ecommerce Launchpad Toolkit

How To  Launch
Your Ecommerce Store Like a Boss.

Starting a new Ecommerce Store

Here are the steps

A – Attention

You need to grab the attention of the people in your target audience segment. This is going to be hard given TikToks hold over people’s attention. You need to make noise, get and hold attention and then you can sell to people

B – Benefits

People want to know quickly what benefits they get. How does your product help them. Highlighting features and how they solve problems is how you do that.

C – Call To Action

You have less than 8 seconds to influence someone who interacts with your brand. You need to be calling them to take action using Shop Now, Buy Now, Pick a Colour type CTAs.

Store Branding Checklist

Here are the steps

  • Clearly Define your category of products
  • Clearly identify who your competitors are, we don’t want any confusion between our store and their store
  • Clarify your voice and use it throughout the branding
  • Create a simple logo yourself with Canva or hire someone to do it for you from Upwork or Fiver
  • Picj 2-3 colours to keep the consistency
  • Then brand your social media accounts and your website with all the new branding elements

People remember brands, that they found memorable.

When Should You Scale Product Advertising

Before you can scale your advertising you have to have run viable tests. Without testing basics you risk burning ad dollars and with CPCs being so high right now its smart money to run test that you know lead to opportunities that impact your business.

Audience Targeting

I would suggest that you test the audiences that you want to target, run a small budget and target these segments for 2-3 weeks. Faster if you get the engagement.

Ad Creative

Test the ad creative you think works best to represent your product and Niche. Make yourself 4 variations to start with. If you have more budget then go wide and test to your hearts desire.

Ad Copy

I think this is the biggest part of the equation and needs to be tested regularly so give this one extra attention. Id suggest making 6 sets of ad copy and running it as if speaking direct to the winning 2-3 audience segments. Talk to them as if they were in your store.

You will see quickly if ad copy is working by click throughs.

Offers

Is your offer string enough? how do you know it is? have you looked around at other product offerings? well, you should.

Experiment with the offer, what can you do for discounts for first-time buyers, referrals and other levers that can be pulled for someone to see its a value-packed offer for them?

Product Bundles

Dont settle for offering 1 product get creative with bundles, give 2 for 1’s, try new offer types like 5 for the price of 4 and so on. You should see uplifts in engagement if you have a good fit for product value vs price.

Landing Page

Always test the landing page, does it make sense, can it be better? can it be clearer for a buyer? always. Get this sorted out fast this is your money maker.

Now when you have all of these really rocking then you can consider boosting ad budget. But Id wait if you have not had several sales before increasing ad budgets.

Social Media Advertising Strategies

Most channels are saturated with boring ads, but there is opportunity.

We face a challenge every time we start advertising new products. This problem is always around getting the fastest results for the lowest ad spend.

*Currently, in December 2023 Twitter (X) has had big brands leave the platform for what ever reason and the ad ML has dropped the CPC so ad clicks are running sub $0.70 for anyone wanting to arbitrage this and make a killing.

Here is where I would rank the social channel.

What Social Media Channels Give Fast Results

  1. Pinterest
  2. TikTok
  3. Instagram
  4. Twitter (X)
  5. Google
  6. Facebook

What Social Media Channels Are More Expensive

  1. Facebook
  2. Google
  3. Instagram
  4. TikTok
  5. Pinterest
  6. Twitter (X)

So now you have a benchmark you can assess what platform makes sense to use for your advertising. I like Pinterest and Google personally. Google still gets the bulk of my conversions and it’s quite fast for learning what works if you need to experiment.

Marketing Budgets for Brand New Products

If you have $0 marketing budget then build your organic social media following, post daily, connect with other types of brands and focus on your website and social profile SEO.

Use TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest.

If you have between $100-1000 marketing budget You can send out free samples to micro influencers develop your partnerships and create an affiliate program for your products. This is a good way to get some boost for your budget.

Use TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest. Maybe Twitter depending on Elons mood lol.

If you have $1500+ marketing budget then you should give Facebook and Google Shopping ads some focus. They require bigger budgets and can bring in higher yield based on platform traffic volumes.

Example Instagram Content Calendar

When building a brand you need to be on social to be heard and seen. It can be hard to get that first momentum but if you have a plan and can stick to it then you should be able to get the eyeballs you need on your products.

Here is an example Instagram content schedule

Monday

  • Your niche photo with fun caption
  • Motivation photo to start the week

Tuesday

  • Fun interesting facts related to your niche

Wednesday

  • Influencer with your niche product (get approval first obviously)

Thursday

  • Tips and tricks on how to use your product best

Friday

  • Photo of your niche products

Saturday

  • Promote your product be bold

Sunday

  • Share customer reviews with pictures of the product

*I suggest not posting daily, that type of behaviour for a business owner leads to burnout and unwanted stress.

Tactics for Print-on-Demand Clothing

You should already know your niche audience or at least relate to your niche.

If you want to introduce clothing as a new product into your business but you are not a clothing brand, that’s fine Print on demand works for this if you have a following or some creative thinking to put on shirts and hats.

If you have a clothing brand then here are some

  1. Offer as many sizes as possible
  2. Offer 5 colours no more than that. It’s confusing and takes the focus away from buying.
  3. Always offer the colour black it’s timeless and everyone owns black clothing.
  4. Bundle everything, 2 for 1s, 5 for 4 works and be creative with bundles
  5. Allow customisations where they can print their name on things print their faces and other as the print on demand companies now have the ability to highly cuistomise clothing for you.

Cute animals work for most niches and they appeal to kids and women, sometimes to men. The design depends on your target audience.

In short, anchor text is the clickable part of the text that links to another URL. This is for links on your website to your website or for any external links from your website or pointing to your website.

The anchor link is the navigation point between pages. Other than telling the reader what the link is about, it also represents a signal to Googles learning that websites trust each other based on the types of anchor texts used.

You get backlinks from other websites pointing to your site. They use anchor text to describe to their readers what the link on the next page is about kinda like a preview before the click.

You get internal links from your own websites pages when you want the reader to see something relevant about the topic or your brand.

But there’s more to backlinks than just the sheer number of them.

Authority of the referring URL matters a lot.

Relevancy matters too.

And finally, there’s the anchor text to every backlink that Google considers important as well.

This passage is direct from the Google Search Operators manual regarding anchor text.

“This text tells users and Google something about the page you’re linking to. With appropriate anchor text, users and search engines can easily understand what the linked pages contain.”

How do you use Anchor Texts in SEO?

You need anchor text variety to build relevance around the topic, your brand, your information and generally to help users navigate the World Wide Web.

This means you will need some branded anchor texts, you will need keyword anchor texts and you will need a mixture of the other types to help relate you to the topics that you want to rank for.

Some hardcore SEO nerds actually measure and monitor the anchor text percentages between them and their competitors and while it sounds like overkill, logically this makes hella sense to us emaths to outmaneuvere your competitors in the SERP.

You have to have a carefully measured approach because if you go hard on the keyword-targeted anchor texts then you may appear to have influence over where you get the backlinks from, Google gets grumpy when people do this.

You need to have some brand so people know you are real as a business a blogger or a subject matter expert. The brand matters but not nearly as much as the keyword targeting.

For some advanced sneaky tactics, there’s some stuff you can do with image overlays of different transparency that work as well, remember that Google is a machine and will process the information as it parses it.

The Takeaway

Keep natural where you can, but sprinkle in the odd targeted keyword anchor text. Be sensible and be considerate of the way you use them where you can control them.

You can influence what your website’s internal links will do and what the anchor text will say. This is your testing ground for finding a strategy that works.

As for people linking to your website you don’t always have control and therefore have to work with what you get unless you are paying them or bartering with them for the backlink or mention and may have some control over the anchor text.

Be smart, use maths and look at what your competitors are doing. The key to winning with this strategy is on the first page of Google for your keyword search terms. You just need to look around.

Risks of Running Affiliate Niche Sites

Risks of Running Affiliate Niche Sites

From 2014 I’ve always had 5 or so affiliate niche sites running in their various forms. I’ve had wins and I’ve had losses, the ones that fail don’t get spoken about much or highlighted except in retrospect.

One of my buddies has been asking about getting into affiliate niches lately and it’s been refreshing to give an open-book approach to the positives and the negatives of it all.  That’s what prompted this post and me thinking back to all the risks I wish I had known about when starting.

Always chasing shiny objects made me try a lot of side hustles.

One of the most profitable I tried was niche websites. I didn’t earn crazy amounts of money, but it was enough for a college student at the time.

But things don’t always go according to plan.

Here’s what you need to look out for when getting into affiliate niche websites.

Google’s Algorithm

If you are active on any SEO forum or community, you know Google algorithm updates are like Doomsday.

It’s the day you find out if your beloved websites will live or be destroyed. It brings a lot of depression to unlucky SEOs who have their traffic cut in half or more.

After selling my websites, I can relax and grab some popcorn while others…suffer.

The worst part of the algorithm updates is that you can get hit even if you follow the rules. Your website can bounce back. But it takes time, and there will be a while when you have no business. No traffic, no sales.

Copycats & Ripoff Artists

Something I wish I had known sooner was just how bad the ripping off of others was. When I was learning the ropes I would ask those in forums who were higher up the food chain than me at the time for opinions or suggestions. While it seemed to be in good faith I learned that you do not share your money-making websites with anyone!

Trust no one. Keep anything that makes you money close to your chest.

These people I had asked for suggestions had copied my niche, and my monetization and to some degree ripped off my content and basically taken their seniority to take the niche out of my hands. I still compete in these niches but that shit hurts man.

I used to train digital marketers at various digital agencies how to do SEO, how to run effective PPC campaigns and how to do marketing for eCommerce brands. In those training sessions, I would show various examples of techniques and tactics. I developed what I thought to be some level of trust with some of the students who were excelling and showing great promise. They had asked about affiliate marketing and how it works, so I gave them a private tutorial shared a niche site and gave them some pointers for starting out.

The next time I met that group they showed me what they had been up to and they had 3 copies of the niche site I shared a colour scheme and the same topic targeting as me as their niche sites. Thats a huge fail on my part for sharing the site with sharks.

Keep your head on the swivel, trust no one and guard your affiliate niche sites.

Uncertain Future

AI is used everywhere, and search engines will soon rely more on it. This means the future is uncertain for niche websites.

The platforms that run the affiliate marketing like Amazon Associates for example dictate the commission rates. Amazon has dropped from 10% to 2% and changed multiple categories multiple times. It’s a lot of stress changing offers, positions and affiliate platforms when this happens.

Google’s new AI search engine is bugged out right now but it will fine-tune consumer search over time and the space we play as affiliates mainly SEO and some PPC will get smaller and smaller making it an even tougher experience to capture a diminishing audience.

I struggled a lot to make a decision between starting more niche websites and selling them to focus on something else. I wrote the pros and cons on a piece of paper, and this was one of the downsides. Betting on an uncertain future is risky.

According to Hubspot, 31% of consumers use social media to find answers to their questions. This, combined with generative search, is another reason website traffic will decrease.

Niche sites are here to stay, but the ones that will swim in the deep waters are those with real brand power, and real effort put into their content and personality shown in the website.

Traffic will get harder to acquire, pay-to-play will be enforced and the competition will be harder.
