How Dropshipping works

The Inner Workings of the Dropship Model

The art of dropshipping is all about finding products that you can buy low and sell high without ever touching the product. All transparency I always buy the products that I dropship so that I can create content with these products that is unique and in most cases more superior to the suppliers and other dropshippers. You get paid upfront by the customer and then use that money to buy the products from the supplier, voila dropshipping.

Deeper learning on dropshipping

Dropshipping means you are a drop under the actual product seller and you sell the products yourself and have the actual supplier deliver the products on your behalf. You do not have to touch teh product to sell it.

A dropshipper doesn’t “purchase” an item in the conventional sense. Instead, they become an affiliate of that particular product. When a customer buys a product from a dropship website most stores have some form of automation that orders the product for that customer and has the supplier send it directly to the customer.

In my opinion, one of the best things about dropshipping is that it allows independent business to test out new product ideas, and even whole new product lines, without having to “invest” in the product up front. It’s a business model that allows many more people to participate in entrepreneurship. It’s also an incredibly effective way to multiply your sales. That does sound like you, doesn’t it? Well, if it does, check out my guide on how to start dropshipping below.

If you’re starting from scratch, there are many ways you can get around this restriction and still achieve a very successful online business. But, if you have an existing business or perhaps you’ve been selling via other methods, this is a restriction that might really get your blood pumping!

Whether you’re a high-profile entrepreneur looking to take the next step or an average Joe just trying to make a buck, dropshipping is an excellent way for you to connect with your customers. It’s accessible, it allows you to sell on-demand without the need to stockpile inventory, and most importantly, it lets you test the market for your idea or product before risking anything on your own stock.

Retailers of all sizes are jumping on the dropship bandwagon. They’re adopting online services to power their day-to-day operations like nowhere else before. But, their focus is to expand their network of sellers of their product in essence to catch more fish by having more nets in teh ocean.

The model continues to confound many people. That’s why we wrote this comprehensive guide to help you grow your business. In this book, we’ll cover everything you need to know about setting up a successful dropshipping business including finding reliable suppliers, what kinds of products are best for dropshipping, the best marketing strategies, and more.

You don’t have to be in the direct marketing business to make use of all this information, of course. But if you’re in the direct marketing business, this information can be a major help in making your fortune even larger.

What is dropshipping (how does it work)?

It’s a new way for online retailers to increase their sales volume without increasing their overhead.

There are many lucrative dropship niches, but how do you find them? That’s the question I’m going to answer in this section.

What is the supply chain? How does it affect your business? How can you leverage the supply chain to make your business more profitable? These are just three of the questions this report will answer for you.

Finding the right dropshipping suppliers and wholesalers is the first step in setting up a profitable dropshipping business.

There are hundreds of books written about how to increase website profits. Very few of those books give you an instant formula that will make your website profitable.

Benefits of dropshipping

There are many business models that are accessible to aspiring entrepreneurs, including conventional retail, direct marketing, affiliate marketing, and even some types of multi-level marketing. With dropshipping, you can test different product ideas without taking any inventory or paying any upfront fees. This means you can quickly learn what products sell well and without any risk. Here are a few more reasons why “dropshipping” is such a popular model:

If you’re looking for tips and stories to help you succeed with your dropshipping venture, this is the book for you. It contains 19 profiles of successful dropshippers and offers insight and inspiration into what makes them tick.

1. Less capital is required

The biggest advantage to dropshipping is that it’s possible to sell without having to stock up tons of inventory upfront. That’s because they’ve had to pay retail for everything they sell. But, thanks to the wonders of online retailing, things are changing. Now, you can sell through Amazon with as little as $50.

With the “dropshipper,” you don’t have to ever buy a product from the supplier. You only have to send your customers to the supplier, who will sell the product and send you a check for the sales he makes. This model allows you to start a business from scratch without any overhead. With very little money you can start a successful dropshipping business. If you don’t have to make significant upfront investments in inventory, it makes sense to do so. Because you are not committed to selling through any inventory you purchase upfront, like in a “retail” business, there is less risk involved in starting a “dropshipping” business or testing a new product line.

2. Easy to get started

Running an ecommerce business is much more difficult when you have to deal with physical products. There are many benefits to using dropshipping as your primary method of selling online. You will not have to worry about: Inventory Issues. Stock Keeping. Order Fulfillment.

Running a successful Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) business

Fulfilling your orders

Accounting reasons alone aren’t enough to keep you from making a big profit.

This is where most people stop reading. They think it’s too hard or it’s not worth it. It’s neither. It’s actually quite easy.

Has been responsible for the continued success of this business for more than 15 years. Before that, he was vice president of marketing for Shaklee, one of the largest suppliers of nutritional products in the world.

3. Low overhead

Since you don’t have to deal with purchasing inventory or managing a warehouse, your overhead is quite low. That means, you can sell much more product for the same amount of money you would otherwise have to spend. Home-based businesses are the most profitable type of ecommerce business to own and operate. A simple way to get started is to set up an Amazon FBA account and sell through that channel. There’s no need to invest thousands in inventory, hire employees or keep any other type of bricks-and-mortar establishment. As you grow, your costs will almost certainly increase. However, your costs will be low when compared to those of traditional brick-and-mortar businesses.

4. Flexible location

A “from-the-heart” business can be run from anywhere with an internet connection. It doesn’t have to be from a “computer nerd’s paradise” like Los Angeles or New York City. You don’t even have to live in an “Internet Cafe”. If you can communicate with your suppliers and customers easily, you can run and manage your business no matter where you are in the world.

5. Wide selection of products to sell

Trending products are a great way to offer lots of choice without having to pre-purchase all your stock. This gives you more control over your inventory and lets you make your sales decisions based on current needs and preferences. You don’t have to pay for an item if the supplier stocks it. If the supplier wants to sell it to you at cost, they can send it to you free of charge. This saves a lot of time and effort for you.

6. Easier to test

Dropshipper, also known as “direct response merchant” is an excellent way to fulfill orders for your own products or for those you’re trying to sell. It’s also an excellent way to start up a new business if you have the product and are skilled at creating sales pitches. The biggest advantage of dropshipping is that it allows you to “list without owning”. By letting Amazon handle all the back end work, it frees up your time to focus on creating a killer marketing campaign.

7. Easier to scale

But when you sell on Amazon, if you receive three times the number of orders, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to do three times as much work. It all depends how your items are listed. If they are properly arranged and appear in the right categories, the system will automatically send more traffic your way. When you use a dropshipper to handle fulfillment for you, most of the work involved in taking on additional inventory and fulfilling those orders will be done by the supplier, allowing you to grow almost effortlessly.

It’s easier to grow sales with dropshipping than it is to grow sales with a more traditional ecommerce business model. As a result, it is not uncommon for dropshipper’s customer service obligations to increase as their sales increase.

Disadvantages of dropshipping

Dropshipping is an excellent way for someone getting started with an online store, or for someone looking to expand their product offerings. It has all the benefits we discussed, plus it has the added benefit of being quite easy to get going. Like all approaches, the disadvantages of dropshipping are not worth considering unless you are absolutely certain that your chosen approach will work for you.

There’s no such thing as a bargain when it comes to true excellence. Excellence always costs more. There are several considerations to keep in mind.

If you decide to go the dropshipping route, you will be responsible for setting up all of the fulfillment and order management connectors manually or automated. Most people choose automated using something like Oberlo that handles fulfilment on your behalf.

This means that you will need to have an effective system in place for receiving orders, handling payments, and shipping products to the customers. The choice of how you source and fulfil product orders automated or manually is all yours. Either way, this is a very time-consuming task which takes away from the fun and excitement of owning an online store. If you don’t do this properly, you could lose a lot of money.

One of the biggest advantages of the “conventional” way of doing business is that you don’t have to pay any fees to list your items on various search engines. That’s because those engines are owned by “the man.

1. Low margins

Running a profitable dropshipping business in a highly competitive niche is extremely difficult. That’s why most people don’t try. They’re satisfied making enough money to pay the bills while dreaming about some day making millions.

Many businesses that want to compete with you are going to do anything, including breaking the law, just to stay in business. They’ll sell products as cheaply as possible and cut every corner they can to make a buck. eBay makes a tiny fraction of their sales from the third party “feeder” sellers.

In fact, as a general rule, third party sellers account for only about 5% of the total eBay sales volume. If you decide to drop ship alongside your Shopify store, your margin on that channel will be thin.

Dropship model is very competitive.

If you choose to drop ship on your own, then there is no risk whatsoever. You make your money when you sell the item, not when you send it out.

Low-priced websites are a dime a dozen. If you are able to offer exceptional customer service, then your differentiator will be all about your people and the passion they have for your products and the service they provide to your customers. Of course not! That would be stupid.

What you need to do instead is make sure your prices are always clearly marked as “per unit” or “piece” or “individual” … or whatever… and include an Due to fierce competition, the potential profit margins in a niche will be quickly hurt.

That means fewer people will be willing to pay the high prices that are needed to sustain a profitable niche. The result? Unfortunately, you can’t do much about dropshipping except accept it as part of the game and hope you find a niche / vertical that’s well suited for dropshipping.

It’s not uncommon for dropshippers to rip off content and creative from manufacturers only to have their ripped off content copied by another dropshipper. This is the crazy circle of competitive dropshipping.

2. Inventory issues

Keeping track of inventory is much more complex if you are outsourcing it to a third party fulfillment center. This is especially true if you have a large or constantly fluctuating inventory.

But when you’re using a fulfillment service like ShipStation, where your inventory is physically located is completely irrelevant.

What is relevant is that your inventory is always available and you know exactly where it is at all times. Today, there are several apps that allow you to sync with suppliers. It’s a real blessing for busy people like you who can’t always find the time to go to a physical store.

A good rule of thumb is to always have more product than your customers will ever need of your high-ticket products.

This gives you room to maneuver should a situation arise where your supplier (or even you) needs to send more product your way.

Oberlo also lets ecommerce merchants take automated actions when their suppliers’ stock hits zero. When this happens, they will receive an automatic email and SMS message notifying them of the situation.

Another good idea is to create an “Amazon Wish List” on your own website. Tell your site visitors they can put in their email address and you’ll send them a message with a link that lets them instantly sign up to receive notification whenever anything on your site is marked down.

The email will read something like this: Subject Line: Product Name Is Here By Special Request!

3. Shipping complexities

Even if you work with only one supplier, there’s a good chance that supplier doesn’t have any close relationship with other suppliers from which to obtain products. This makes it difficult for them to get the best possible price for those products.

This doesn’t complicate your shipping costs at all. You can still use the same shipping options as always. In fact, using more than one option will probably make your experience even better.

Say one supplier offers a 60-day guarantee and the other two don’t. Which of these three options would be best for this customer? It’s probably unwise to absorb the shipping costs yourself.

If the customer is going to receive 3-5% discounts almost every time they purchase your products, it makes sense to give them that discount right off the top… and let them send payment for all three items at one time. Even when it makes sense to include these “hidden” fees, it can still be difficult to automate these calculations.

4. Supplier errors

Have you ever made a mistake and then been blamed for it by someone who had no right to be mad at you? That’s called “taking the fall.” And if you do a lot of things right, but one or two things wrong, there is always someone who will take the fall for you.

Whether you are using the 10-day guarantee or the 30-day guarantee, it is always best to let your customer know within 10 days of receiving their order if it is not perfect.

This will greatly improve your fulfillment percentages. And missing items, botched shipments and damaged reputations caused by bad or mediocre suppliers are no fun at all!

5. Limited customization and branding

Dropshipping doesn’t give you a lot of control over the product itself. However, when you understand the basics, you can add lots of features to increase your control. The supplier usually designs and brands the product. That means they create the look and feel of the product and put their name and their company’s name on it.

1. When it comes to Alibaba dropshipping, there are two main concerns:

2. Will the supplier let me change the product I am selling?

3. Even if the supplier will let me change the product, does the product have to stay the same as what is in the product catalog?

Most product enhancements require a minimum order quantity to be viable and affordable for the manufacturer. Some changes or additions to the product may or may not require a minimum order quantity. It all depends on the nature of the change.

Common questions about dropshipping

Here important steps to get your profitable dropshipping business off the ground. That’s an excellent question. Before I answer it, though, I want to make one thing perfectly clear: What I am going to share with you here is not a complete description of what drop shipping is. No.

How much do I need to invest to start dropshipping?

This book contains an excellent overview of what you need to know to get started with a profitable dropshipping business. You’ll discover the exact costs for setting up your business, how to find products to sell, and how to select the right payment method for your needs. These are the essentials, but the real numbers will vary widely depending on the type of product you are selling, how well you are pricing your product, your sales volume, and other factors.

Online store

This is the best e-book you will ever read if you want to make serious money with a laptop and an internet connection.

You’ll need to find an e-commerce platform in order to create and host your online store. Of course, we recommend you start a Shopify store. It’s the best ecommerce platform available and it’s incredibly easy to use. With the Oberlo Amazon integration, you’ll be able to effortlessly sync with the Amazon marketplace to source products, and you’ll get access to our entire product selection of themes and free branding tools so you can get your business up and running quickly.

Domain name

Estimate Cost: $5 – $20 PER YEAR

It’s hard to create trust with your customers when you’re using an IP address from Comcast, AOL or any other internet service provider. You should always look for a.com domain that fits your brand. For example, if you’re looking for a website name for your car detailing business, you shouldn’t go for a generic name such as “www.detailingbusiness.net” but rather something more like “www.yourbrandname.com”. Go to our website and use our domain name generator to get your own.com or.net domain name. It’s free!

Test orders

Estimated cost: $297 per year

If you don’t have any prior experience in the field, it might be difficult to decide which products are worth promoting and which are not. In this case, it would be prudent to at least test out a few of the more promising products before committing to a long term effort. One big mistake almost everyone makes when they get started selling on Amazon is they try to list every single product they have. This is a terrible idea. Instead, what you want to do is identify the highest-quality products you have available and focus only on enhancing the best of those.

Online advertising

An estimate of the cost of getting your business up and running ranges from $500 (if you are just getting started) to an incredible $20,000 (if you already have a high-volume ecommerce business), depending on your specific situation.

Every ecommerce business should look for ways to reduce their average cost to acquire a customer through organic channels like content marketing, SEO, and word of mouth. They should also look for ways to increase their LTV (Lifetime Value) of an existing customer through loyalty programs, cross-selling, and up-selling. If you don’t know how to advertise, your chances of succeeding in a product-based business are greatly diminished.

That’s why it is so important for you to learn how to advertise profitably. Channels are the ways in which your offer gets delivered to your customer. Some of the more common channels are search engines, direct mail, newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, outdoor ads, and so on.

How do dropshippers make money?

Running a “pure” dropshipping business means selecting the very best products to sell and having the courage and conviction to market those products to the customer without interference or “competition” from any other products you may be selling.

Remember, every business owner needs to spend money on marketing whether they want to or not. It’s an investment that always pays off.

If you’re doing it right… and you are if you have a real passion for your product or service… You should also include the cost of providing customer support whenever there’s a product or shipping issue.

And finally, you need to deduct any refunds you give to customers from the gross sales amount. Finally, is the price your supplier (or you) sets for the product. As you can see, there is a lot more to an A/B split testing campaign than simply changing a few words.

Because of all the costs to consider when running a profitable online business, many online entrepreneurs prefer to “dropship” (or get their goods delivered to them) by selling other people’s products. It’s a great way to minimize the risks and maximize the profits of owning an online business.

Suppliers miss out on sales they would have otherwise received because their dropshipper is selling their product at a lower price than what the supplier charges their customers.

That’s why it’s important for a supplier to set a fair price for their products when they are sold through a third party. To make a profit with your dropshipping business, it’s a good idea to find out what it costs you to acquire a customer, and then price your products accordingly.

Is dropshipping a legitimate business?

It’s not only legal, it’s a super simple way to sell products from virtually anywhere in the world. And it’s a great way for entrepreneurs to get their feet wet before deciding to take the risk and expense involved in opening a brick-and-mortar store.

Like any business, it’s important to satisfy customer expectations and build a brand that resonates with the right audience.

It’s also important to know when to let go and trust your existing customers to do what they do best… which is, give you their money and tell their friends about your product or service.

If this question arises often, it’s because people are not fully understanding how dropshipping works. It’s important to understand the true nature of dropshipping before asking questions about it, else you’ll just end up creating more confusion. Most retailers aren’t selling products they personally manufacture.

They have an army of people whose sole purpose is to make sure they get as much of your money as possible. These people don’t care whether or not the product is good for you or your family. There’s a few different ways you can use dropshipping to make money, this is the best of the bunch.

It gives your customers the power to select and buy from a wide variety of products, while freeing you up to do what you do best… which is run your business.

If you get the basics down pat, there are many other things you should consider focusing on… to help you grow your business.

It’s imperative that you consult with a lawyer in your geographic region who specializes in online and ecommerce matters. There are certain countries where conducting business legally via the Internet can get you into a world of trouble, so make sure you’re on the right side of the law.

Dropshipping FAQ

What is dropshipping?

Dropshipping is the act of selling your own product… and then… having someone else sell it for you. For example, let’s say you are selling a book on making money in real estate. You write the book and publish it. Then, you set up an online store (using something like www.Amazon.com or www.Blibli.com) and list the book for sale.

Then, all you have to do is make sure someone buys the book from your site… and then… They Become Your Customer! They will pay for the book by check or credit card… and then… You Will Ship The Book To Them Without Ever Meeting Them In Person! Pretty neat, huh? Actually, it’s one of the neatest things you can do with a website
